What is a Hybrid System?

A Hybrid unit looks very similar to an outside air conditioning unit at first glance, but upon closer inspection it is that and so much more. Hybrid units, also known as Heat Pumps, function as heating and cooling systems combined into one unit. For cooling, the heat pump will suck warm air out of the house and expel it outside, just like a standard A/C unit. To produce heat, the unit will collect it from outside elements and bring it inside the home. In cooling mode, the heat pump is measured in SEER units, just like an air conditioner. In heating mode, the unit is rated in HSPF, or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. In winter climates, you might see a thick layer of ice collecting on the unit. This is normal, as the system can still extract heat from the air through the collected ice. It will also use burners to melt the ice if it gets to be too much.

Emerald Heat Pump

Heat Pumps are generally more quiet than other air conditioners and are very reliable. They also have great efficiency advantages, which can save you money year-round. They can be used with electric or natural gas, depending on which happens to be more cost-effective at the time.
